Fire Signs

In earlier astrology, the fire signs were often called bitter, in contrast with the "sweet" air signs.  The three fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius.

Characteristics

Fire signs represent the life-giving and vital force of the zodiac and are termed positive, extroverted, and are supposed to be active, creative, ingenious, dynamic, and highly energetic.

They are seen as the inventors, leaders, and pioneers within humanity, possessing an assertive quality that allows them to act upon the thoughts of others extremely quickly.

The worst qualities of the fire signs are seen as their tendency to be irresponsible, overbearing, impatient, and boastful to the point of hurting others' feelings. They can also supposedly find it very hard to deal with detail because of their quest for the "big picture."

Because astrology holds that fire signs are frequently highly outspoken, they can prove too much for more sensitive types of people who resist the criticism they can produce.

They are supposedly by nature emotionally intense and quick to anger if they disapprove but, unlike water signs, are also very quick to forgive and not sensitive to criticism.

In relationships, fire signs are generally considered to be extremely outgoing and passionate friends, but typically they are seen as requiring a great deal of love from their partner because of their assertive quality, and do not like their partner to have control over their romantic life and/or career.

Although highly extroverted, they do not possess the air signs' ability to relate to varying viewpoints or different types of people, because they supposedly often see differences as conflicting with their own (often self-centred) desires.

Though said to be more passionate and committed under the right circumstance than air signs, fire signs are said to be barren signs. This is probably because their focus on being centre stage or on searching for truth intensely, combined with their often gregarious and friendly nature, means that they may have trouble committing themselves to a lifelong marriage.

Their quest for freedom is said to make fire signs supposedly always want to be freed from this type of burden.

In ancient times Mars, ruler of Aries & the Sun, ruler of Leo also were described to be sterile in nature because of their associations with heat, anger & masculinity. Chief fault is deceit.

Fire is determined, spiteful, short-tempered and vengeful. When angered, Fire will go to almost any extreme necessary to get revenge...and such revenge will, more often than not, be at the moment of the anger, after which it is soon forgotten with no harbouring of any grudge.

Fire is prone to deliberately and openly do things which will irritate others to the point of anger. Fire is straight-forward and has no reservations about hurting the feelings of others...prone to inflict both physical and mental pain.

Relations

with Other Element Signs

Fire signs are supposedly impatient with less extroverted people, especially earth signs, who they believe are extremely manipulative and will smother the fire of life.

They are believed to resent the earth signs' slowness, plotting and preoccupation with detail, and hate the way they pin others down.

They supposedly can be attracted to water signs' passion and intensity, but generally find water signs too secretive – in fact to the point of seeing the water signs' sensitivity as utterly dishonest and deliberately deceitful.

They might envy the water signs' ability to summon strength from emotions rather than through effort, their general means of acquiring power.

Air signs, on the other hand, are seen by the fire signs as able to provide them with concrete ideas to help them develop their ideals. Because air signs share their gregarious, extroverted quality, fire signs are comfortable with them. However, they supposedly do not have the patience to analyse as many possibilities as the air signs would like, so they supposedly act more quickly than air signs might wish.

The Mutable Zodiac Signs

In astrology, the mutable signs (also called common signs or bicorporal or double-bodied signs) are a subgroup of the zodiac.

They are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. The mutable signs straddle two temperate zone seasons, encompassing an inherent duality in its symbolism.

Gemini : - between the spring and summer seasons. As an air sign of the mutable quality, Gemini individuals are said to have the best communication skills of all the signs of the Zodiac. Many astrologers also believe Gemini to be the sign in which the duality associated with the mutable quality is most clearly defined. Gemini, because its symbol is that of the twins, indicates an individual who quite often has a duality of purpose, feeling that he or she has two separate destinies that must be pursued before feeling fulfilled as a human being.

Virgo: - between the summer and autumn seasons. A mutable sign of the element of Earth, Virgo is strongly associated with precision, detail, research and the preservation of health. The mutable metaphor may seem to fall short when applied to Virgo, which does not appear to be a sign with much duality at all. This may be because it is viewed from a literal sense as "The Virgin" in the sense of having not actually had sexual intercourse, rather than in the sense of a Maiden; some one who is ready for sexual intercourse, adult romantic relationships, marriage etc. (relationships beyond the self being a core concern of the following sign Libra.

Virgo is considered mutable because of their flexibility in filling for other people, their reliability, and ability to work and think in the spur of moment. Also, there is a distinct lack of stubbornness in Virgo in comparison to the other earth signs. They are happy and can adapt well into most positions, without necessarily wanting leadership. As such Virgo represents an archetype of transition, and its bicorporal forms are based more on age/initiation rather than across species as per Sagittarius, or in two bodies or paths as with Pisces and Gemini; The Child/Adult; Innocence/Experience etc. Virgos are said to rule the earth best, with the most grace, as compared with the other mutable signs

Sagittarius: - between the autumn and winter seasons. A fiery mutable quality sign, Sagittarius is associated with travel and learning. Sagittarius is half-man, half-animal, although this definition tended to overlap into the areas of human signs vs. bestial signs. Nevertheless, Sagittarius' lofty and intellectual nature, deriving from its ruler, Jupiter, does co-exist with a Zeus-like moral short-sightedness when it comes to fidelity in relationships.

Pisces: - between the winter and spring seasons. Pisces individuals are said to express their mutable duality in an emotional manner characteristic of water signs, fluctuating from one emotional extreme to the other. The symbol of Pisces is that of two fish swimming in opposite currents to one another. Quite often individuals who are strongly influenced by Pisces feel a deep frustration in their lives because they are being pulled in two opposing directions at the same time. Some individuals will try to stick with one path and others will try to maintain both paths, which is often unrealistic. Others try to maintain one path, but periodically veer onto the other path.

Sagittarius is the ninth astrological sign in the Zodiac, originating from the constellation of Sagittarius.  Classed as a positive/masculine, extrovert sign its element is fire and its quality is mutable.  Sagittarius is ruled by the planet Jupiter which is not only one of the most important gods in Roman mythology (ruler of the heavens) but also the planet that signifies good fortune in astrology.  Under the tropical zodiac, the sun is in Sagittarius roughly from November 22 to December 21.   Under the sidereal zodiac, it is currently there roughly from December 16 to January 14.

The astrological symbol for Sagittarius has a dual meaning. The first and most common is that of a bow and arrow. The second and less well-known is that of an arrow lifting up a cross-shaped burden, representing the struggle the Sagittarius faces.

Those born under this sign are extremely broad minded, optimistic and confident. They are generous and understanding and totally uninterested in petty jealousies. Under this sign are born the philosophers of the zodiac. These people always have faith that things will turn out right in the end, no matter how bad things may be. Their positive thought patterns tend to attractive positive experiences to them. These people are honest to a fault, their outspokenness often alienates others.

Sagittarius Illumination c.1475, Italian Book of Prayers courtesy of Pierpont Morgan Library, NYCIt is essential for them to be independent as freedom is the staff of life to them. Travel and constant variety of activity is essential. Very often, Sagittarians will live abroad for a while or certainly value contact with foreign cultures as they consider this to be a valuable way of broadening the mind. The same motivation lies behind their desire to constantly expand their academic knowledge. They are often motivated to pass on their learning to others and can make very gifted teachers.

Other areas in which they can find success are in journalism, lecturing, politics or commercial enterprises in which they deal with other countries.  It is not easy for a Sagittarius to settle down to marital and domestic routine.  Infidelity is often an issue in a Sagittarius marriage as, for these people, there is always a new adventure beckoning around the corner.  Sagittarians need to develop some of the cool logic of the opposite sign of Gemini, to balance their lofty idealism.

Mythology

In mythology Sagittarius is often associated with either a Satyr or a Centaur (in the case of the latter, often the centaur Chiron, who taught and tutored various heroes in Greek myth). In Greek mythology, centaurs were adventurous, brave, and wise, but they were also given to brawling and uncivilized behaviour. Sagittarius is also associated with the Greek god Zeus and sometimes the Greek goddess Tyche, as well as the Norse god Thor.
